Spectrum 11 is an anthology of art collected in the year 2003.

The way in which the art for Spectrum is selected is through a process of artist submission and then jury selection. The group of 6 jurors this year had to wade through and pick the best of just under 4000 pieces of artwork.

The jury for Spectrum 11 consists of: Georg Brewer, Joseph DeVito, Gary Gianni, John Jude Palencar, Greg Spalenka, and Roxana Villa.

The Grand Master chosen for Spectrum 11 is Michael R. Whelan, There is a full page bio/synopsis of his work and on the opposite facing page is a full-page illustration of his.

Following that, there is a 6 page article recapping the events of 2003; the article deals with fantasy, science fiction, and fantastic art broken down into the categories of general happenings, advertising, books, comics, dimensional, editorial, and institutional art.

If you haven't seen Tiger & Bunny, please please please do. It's the most perfect series ever. A perfect blend between American-style superhero comic and Japanese anime. I despair the fact that it only has 25 episodes. By the time the last scene came out (which is a perfect, perfect ending), my heart just broke. Seriously. I still can't find some of the pieces.

This book mostly consists of Masakazu Katsura's (of Video Girl Ai and Is) original sketches and character design for the series. I love how we can see how different his earlier vision for Karina and Kotetsu were.

I have to admit, I have some doubts about this book at first. I've always view comic books based on TV series with deep skepticism. More often than not, the art is a joke and the plot is paper-thin. I'm pleasantly surprised, however, at the quality of this book. The plot is not as strong as the original series, but I can still see it as the series' continuation. The art is quite true to the animation, with believable adjustment to the characters' appearance due to aging. It makes Aang and Katara's annoying love-moment just a little bit better, really. Animated version Aang looked too similar to my 8-year-old little nephew for my viewing comfort.

This comic was originally released as a three part comic series, and later combined into this book. To my knowledge, the only additional material is the commentary and character sketch on the back.

This book is full of amazing illustrations. Very recommended for all fans of manga-style arts. The only thing that bothers me is the thinness of the cover and spine. For a Japanese artbook, the cover is unusually soft and easy to bend. The spine is fragile, I can't open the middle part of this book comfortably without breaking it. A book this amazing (not to mention thick!) should be released as a hardback.

I really do like Mashima Hiro, but I have to admit he's a better mangaka than illustrator. His art style is the quintessential shounen manga style and the guy has the tendencies to choose a too sharp color palette for his illustrations. If you don't like shounen manga and never heard of Mashima Hiro or Fairy Tail, I wouldn't recommend this book for you. If you're a fan of Fairy Tail series, however, this book is definitely a must have. The whole book (except the small section in the back dedicated for interview) is full of the best artworks from Fairy Tail

Kazuo Oga is an art director and background artist probably best known for his work in Ghibli films such as Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Kiki's Delivery Service, Spirited Away, Howl's, and Arietty. On 2007, Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art exhibit more than 600 pieces of his work. This book is a special collectible book containing all pieces displayed for this exhibition. I don't think it was sold anywhere else, so your best chance to get this book is through ebay. I have to say, though, their prices are crazy. I got mine secondhand from online bookstore Mandarake for a much more reasonable price even after counting shipping fee
