Book Review: Dawn: The Worlds of Final Fantasy

Yoshitaka Amano has done concept art and illustrations for all the Final Fantasy games. This book collects his work on the first four games, Final Fantasy I - IV.

If you're looking for art that turned into character models, or detailed notes on why each artwork was created, this is probably the wrong book for you. This book has no accompanying notes, and a lot of the artwork served as an inspiration for the creative teams - unlike other, more modern concept art, which may be turned into exact 3D models.

If, however, you want to see some gorgeous fantasy watercolours, this is a great book. The first 100 pages, which include several fold-out sections, are packed with illustrations, from character designs to ships and fight scenes. The last 15 pages are smaller black ink illustrations, many of which are sketchier - although still attractive.
