Art/books for filmmakers
Hello,

I want to be the filmmaker. Some of my favorite directors have very interesting skills: Ridley Scott communicate to the crew the visuals he wishes to achieve through his personal storyboards, it's called Ridleygrams, James Cameron, when he was little boy, learned to draw by copying ilustrations from comic magazines.. Original Terminator, The Alien Queen, Power Loader from Aliens.. He draw these himself!

I would love to develop these skills as well! But the problem is, I drawn when I was a kid, but then I suddenly stopped, so I need to start at really basic stuff.

Of course, there are more areas which director has to know: understanding of composition, perspective, visual storytelling, etc., etc. .. I keep watching movies and reading scripts, I am able to learn myself some of these things, but I also understand that there's so much to learn.. And I am looking forward to!

So I would like to ask, which books would you recommend? The topics I am interested in are: composition, perspective, storyboarding, storytelling, character design, conceptual art..

Thanks to Parka for his beautiful site, thanks to suggests from the great community here!

Jakub

RE: Art/books for filmmakers
I only know of a few books relating to filmmaking.

One's Framed Ink which talks about composition.

Storyboarding books are also quite useful.

You'll be able to find more books and reviews on Amazon using the term "filmmaking"

Also check out Vimeo for short films created by the public. Some of them are really inspirational.

Concerning of drawing in general, which book would you recommend for beginners? I guess it's better to buy a book which focuses on one topic "Drawing a Man" rather than "Drawing all in one: Man, Landscapes, Machinery, etc. etc.", right? Thank you for suggestions!

If it's drawing in general, I would recommend Keys to Drawing

Drawing people you can go with Figure Drawing for All It's Worth

For composition, Framed Ink

Thank you Parka Smile

By the way, The Fifth Element, my TOP 5 movie, the art book is both a dream for me and nightmare.. It seems to be pretty rare, considering the prices it's being sold for..

One is on the eBay at the moment: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?V...0736249698
