Book Review: Yuusuke Murata's FIELD of COLORS - vinhnyu - 13-08-2010 07:02 PM

FIELD OF COLORS is essentially an artbook focusing on Shueisha Weekly Shônen JUMP's sport manga "EyeShield 21" written by Riichirô Inagaki and drawn by Yûsuke Murata.
It's all about american football but even if you don't like sport, the illustrations in there are still great!
95% of its content are full page illustrations starting with the early years to his current drawing style.
The books ends with early designs of the manga and an interview between the authors of EyeShield 21 and the author of Slam Dunk and Vagabond: Takehiko Inoue.
There's also a walkthrough of his cover art in the sides of the book.
I'm actually a huge fan of Yûsuke Murata, who managed to make a cool mix of japanese manga and american comics style.
He isn't scared to draw tons of lively characters in one page with a dynamic and impact line.

Never heard of the series myself, but judging from those illustrations it looks like it could be fun. Nice character designs too. Thanks

Added 2 new links. Since the publisher is a big company (Shueisha), you can be pretty sure it won't be sold out before some years.
Sorry for the apparent flood in my other threads, I was afraid you would be too scared to buy from amazon.jp because of their insane shipping fees.
I just wanted to let you know there're other alternatives, you only have to ebay or google the book title or the name of the artist and look for the cheapest one.
It's kinda the most enjoyable part in buying an artbook: look for the cheapest site!

I've actually always hated football, but years ago when EyeShield21 vol.1 was first published in the USA I decided to read the first chapter of it and a bunch of other sample manga. It was the only one that caught my attention and kept me reading well beyond the first chapter. Now it is my #1 favorite on-going manga! Every single person I've got to try it--whether they love or hate football--has loved it. Those that like football don't feel talked down to, and those that don't like it don't feel lost. It's a very little known and overlooked manga here for some reason, but you'd like it if you tried it. Smile

Similarly, I ADORE this artbook. I picked it up in Tokyo and was really excited to find that unlike other anime/manga artbooks that are half text and sketch, this one is mostly original illustration. Really pretty watercolor/marker work and fantastic lighting on these pieces. Smile
