Review: Adonit Jot Pro Fine Point Stylus

My search for the perfect stylus for the iPad has led me to discover the new Adonit Jot Pro Fine Point Stylus.

Highlight of this stylus is the innovative tip that uses a transparent disc as input. To understand why the stylus is designed this way, you have to know that the iPad is designed for use with fingers. Fingertips have a large surface area and the iPads are designed to detect those large surface input. So to create this large surface area, Adonit has chose to use a piece of transparent plastic disc. I don't foresee that it's going to scratch the surface. Fingers crossed.

In actual use, the transparent disc works really well and does not block you from seeing what the screen is showing. If you've used your fingertips to draw before, you'll know how frustrating it is to not be able to see the strokes you've drawn because they are blocked by your drawing finger.

This stylus is really built for drawing and any artists who want to experiment drawing on their tablets should check out the Jot Pro.

The disc glides smoothly on the surface and it's also equally as smooth on all the various drawing apps I've tested. You can also use the stylus at any angle because the disc, which is held by a tiny ball, is capable of adjusting to angles you typically use for drawing.

There's also a bit of a dampening effect as the tip seems to be spring loaded. This is not a pressure sensitive stylus though (there's the pressure sensitive Jot Touch with Pixelpoint if you're interested).

Build quality for the stylus is fantastic. The whole this is metal except for the tip. To protect the tip, there's this screw-on cap that you can also screw to the back of the pen. There's also this little rubber ring at the front that dampens the cap as you're screwing it back on. Nice detail. The grip area also has some texture to improve the grip while holding.

The pen clip is cut into the pen itself. So overall, the pen is a perfectly cylindrical and can roll off the table.

This stylus works with most input devices, iPads or Androids, that also detect fingers.

If you're choosing between a squishy rubber tip stylus and this stylus, I would say give this a go.

5 out of 5 stars
