Book Review: Disney's Aladdin: The Making of an Animated Film

Book Review: Disney's Aladdin: The Making of an Animated Film

Disney's Aladdin (wikipedia link) was released in 1992.

This is a "making of" book compared to the other "art of" books released by Disney Editions for the traditional animated films like Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, etc. As such, there's a lot less art relative to the art books, but still plenty enough, including lots of set workplace photos and portraits of legendary animators.

It goes behind the scenes to look at how the animated film was produced. There are stories at all stages of production, from the story pitching, to casting, and finally to animating. The more interesting thing to read about are the stories on the animators, particularly Ron Clements, John Musker, Glen Keane among many others. They go in detail about the story, their work and how they feel about animation.

I can't believe how many actually made animation their love based on cartoons they watched when they were kids. Those cartoons really worked their magic. It's also a source of wonder to see those animators back then, and where they are today in the industry, decades later.

This book provides great insight into the process of making a traditional animation.

Thanks to Kelvin Chan for providing the book for this short review.

Hello I saw many of your comments from Amazon UK, they are really useful guides and I just so envy you have such many amazing collections hahaha. I'd like to buy some books about Disney Sleeping beauty, do you have any idea if there any book is related to sleeping beauty or has Disney ever published "Art of sleeping beauty"?? I'm looking for a long time but couldn't find anything... Hope you don't mind to answer my question. Thank you:)))

Congratulations on an amazing website. Your reviews are so helpful, wonderfully written and informative. Would you please tell me if this Aladdin book is paperback or hardback (with or without dust jacket?) and would you happen to know the ISBN number? I have seen one of these on Amazon but the cover appears to be navy blue and is of a different design. I would love to get hold of your version, with the black embossed cover. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance :-)

Thanks Parka, I picked this

Thanks Parka, I picked this up a while ago now. I found it on Amazon at a good price. Worth double checking with the seller in advance as to which book your buying (i.e., which cover, paperback, hardback etc). Good luck finding the book "anonymous" :)

P.S. Parka, do you have any

P.S. Parka, do you have any of the Walt Disney Sketchbook Series books (limited edition sketchbooks from films such as Sleeping Beauty and The Little Mermaid, published by Applewood Books in late 1990's from 1997-1998). I have five out of the six titles now (am missing Bambi) but I would love to know your thoughts on them and/or see a review from you. Feel free to move this comment if it's not in the right section of your blog. Thanks again!

Hi Parka, Thats great -

Hi Parka, Thats great - thanks for this. I have also been collecting the Disney "Art of" Sotheby's catalogues lately. They are great if you like looking at finished artwork but there are no sketches. Love your reviews on the Walt Disney Archive Series; a fourth book (Layout and Background) is due out toward the end of this year. Here is the link for it:

Can't wait for the review! Keep up the good work, all the best :)
